A painting for me should be first and foremost about 'paint'. I love the play of brush stroke and colour when it initially hits the surface. My interpretation relies on those first clean strokes of line, suggested form and intuitive choice of colour. There is a heady feeling from the original enthusiasm, which is spontaneous and yet decisive. These strokes matter. I enjoy the intimacy and the freedom to use my own colour interpretation without the constraints that the exterior landscape subconsciously demands.
